Maturing egg cases of the California Market Squid sway in the current, anchored to the sand by female squid. Tiny, just-hatched squid are seen swimming nearby. Each translucent egg sac has many individual eggs, the reflective eyes of each developing squid embryo are visible inside each egg. Squid are an important food source for many ocean creatures, and healthy reproduction of squid is important to the entire ocean eco-system.
