Maturing egg case of the California Market Squid. Closeup, see tiny hatchlings swimming in and out of view. There is a parasitic red worm which has invaded one egg case. At the end of the night-time mating ritual, female squid anchors a packet of eggs into the sandy ocean floor. Each translucent egg sac has many individual eggs, the reflective eyes of each developing squid embryo are visible inside each egg. The egg sacs sway in ocean current, while tiny, just-hatched squid swim nearby. Squid are an important food source for many ocean creatures, and healthy reproduction of squid is important to the entire ocean eco-system.
